Last year for Social Action, I traveled to charter school Excel Academy Public Charter School for girls in Washington D.C. every other Wednesday. The relatively new school was designed to teach kids in the area who before did not have a chance for a good education or for any at all. There, eighteen juniors, including myself, volunteered to work with the teachers and help run their classes. Grades ranges from Pre-K to the 5th grade, and each of us were assigned to individual classes with about fifteen young girls in them.
It was great working with the students. I worked with preschoolers, ages three to four year old. Along with being cute, the girls learned with eagerness and enthusiasm for their subjects, which include the alphabet, counting, rhyming, and so on. The teachers loved helping the kids and teaching them, even if it was a little difficult at times because the girls were misbehaving. I still admire how the teachers can go to this kind of job everyday and teach three to four years olds without losing their minds. I personally love kids, but dealing with them every day would make me extremely tired. I praise the endurance of the teachers.
I loved working at Excel Academy and playing with the girls, whether it was in the classroom learning colors or outside on the playground. Helping children grow into intelligent people is probably my favorite kind of service and I would do it any day.
