Eliana Fassihi (2013) guides the freshmen class through the tall glass doors into the welcoming lobby of Sunrise at Fox Hill, an elderly home in Bethesda. Upon arrival she separates her group into smaller sub units, Volley ball, Bingo, or Charades. As the women and men walk past the group, they excitedly and gratefully say “thank you.”
The volley ball room contained two rows of chairs set up facing each other and a three-foot net hung in between them, suited for a game of sit-down volleyball. The elderly residents tossed around a beach ball with the volunteering SR girls.
“Bingo at the Bistro” was set up for the laid-back residents, who were paired up with several freshmen buddies for a rousing game of bingo. The tables were set up at 10:00 a.m. according to a special Halloween activity schedule.
Festive activity number three was a game of “Skits with Stone Ridge Girls.” The freshmen spent their time drawing pictures or acting out famous nursery rhymes, Humpty Dumpty coming first in line, and the Three Blind Mice bringing up the rear.
The originally nervous freshmen soon grew comfortable interacting with the elderly residents, asking questions and humbly offering a “You’re welcome.”
