On Social Action Wednesdays, Katie Tehan ’12, an aspiring marine biologist, can be found volunteering at the National Aquarium in NW Washington, DC as her Fourth Academic independent site. There, she talks to the visitors and educates them about the fish and the environments from which they come.
She says that it is important to raise awareness about the dangers fish face in their natural habitats caused by humans, such as dumping dangerous chemicals into oceans. Katie encourages people to protect marine wildlife by not littering to avoid giving into the build up of trash in the sea that can endanger marine life.
Her only challenge at the aquarium, she says, is having no people to talk to and teach about the amazing fish at the aquarium and how we need to protect their habitats.
