Every year, Bethesda’s Interfaith Clothing Center assists over 6,000 families in the Montgomery County area by supplying them with clothing and furniture. Through generous donations and volunteers, the Interfaith Clothing Center is able to provide basic necessities to families in need. Stone Ridge students set out this Wednesday for the Interfaith Clothing Center and helped out by doing tasks like assembling school supplies in pencil pouches, moving boxes to different warehouses, and filing receipts. Mary Hospedales (3rd Academic) said, “Doing something like volunteering at Interfaith really helps to make a difference.”
Interfaith Clothing Center runs solely on the help of dedicated volunteers and donations from Churches in the area. Caroline Shervin (4th Academic) helped out by carrying big, orange bags of clothing to different warehouses. The student volunteers also helped out by sorting out winter clothing from summer clothing. Joanna Farrell (3rd Academic) sorted and folded the winter clothing from the summer clothing so that it could be be stored for next winter season. Other volunteer jobs include the managing of the store that I.C.C.’s clients directly shop in. Seeing the families that benefit from this clothing center is rewarding and impels Stone Ridge students to social action. When asked how she’s impelled to act, Michelle Camcho (3rd Academic) said, “volunteering raises my awareness of the poverty we have here in our own neighborhood and being able to serve my community impels me to act.”
