Alana Pitcher, school nurse at Stone Ridge, plays a vital role in the freshman Social Action program. Each of the groups of freshman learn about five topics throughout their year of Social Action, the elderly, environment, disabilities, childcare, and CPR certification. Mrs. Pitcher singlehandedly runs the CPR unit, in which every freshman is educated about proper CPR procedure, and at the end of the process earns her CPR certification.
Mrs. Pitcher educates the girls both about how to accurately administer CPR, but also the importance and value of learning how to do so. The freshman gain a sense of responsibility after their lessons and are prepared to help complete strangers should they be faced with an emergency situation. Different methods for infants, children, and adults are taught. This education prepares the girls to be able to lifeguard, babysit, or simply just be prepared should they find themselves in a situation where CPR would be necessary.
