Every Social Action cycle, Helen H. (4th Academic) brings 15 freshman to the National Aquarium in Washington, DC. As a Social Action Leader (SAL), Helen leads the rotation regarding the concern for the environment. Her role entails orienting a group of First Academics with a single facet of the social action program–stewardship to the environment. In order to reinforce the ephemeral state of the planet, Helen planned a trip to the National Aquarium. Toting smart trip cards and sack lunches, the 15 girls boarded the metro at Medical Center.
Upon arriving at Federal Triangle, they began their short walk to the aquarium. Once inside the aquarium, it became glaringly evident why Helen had chosen the site. Along every wall different species of fish filled tanks of all sizes. The majestic display of sea creatures illustrated the fragile state of the environment. Amidst the curiosity and reverence for the scene, the girls understood their call to action. When remarking on their experience a common theme was the realization that it is necessary to protect the land, the ocean, and these species for the sake of posterity. This sentiment was precisely what Helen wished to demonstrate.
