This past Social Action Wednesday, February 9th, Dr. Wong led an intriguing presentation on Sacred Heart education in Japan as well as Japanese culture. Because she grew up in Japan and attended a Sacred Heart School there as a young child, she shared memories and photos that summarized her own childhood experiences. To illustrate certain aspects of the culture, Dr. Wong brought in her daughter’s exquisitely detailed doll set and afterwards shared the story of 1000 paper cranes with the Upper School.
As part of the reflection period at the end of the day, Dr. Wong challenged the Upper School to create a set of multi-colored paper cranes as a symbol of peace. In our small groups, we set out to complete the difficult task of precisely folding small squares of multi-colored paper. Time and skill level prevented us from making 1000 cranes, like the young girl in the story, but the several hundred that were collected are a colorful symbol of peace.
With the recent earthquake in Japan, the Upper School revamped their effort to reach 1000 paper cranes. SoonDr. Wong will send the collected cranes to our Sacred Heart School in Japan as a symbol of hope and recovery for a struggling nation.
